Litibu is an up-and-coming tourism destination in the Riviera Nayarit just 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta. This new development is located near the town of Higuera Blanca, about halfway between Sayulita to the north and Punta Mita to the south. The pristine white sand beaches are protected by the Punta Mita peninsula, making them excellent for water sports such as swimming and snorkeling and a prime area for real estate.
FONATUR (National Trust Fund for Tourist Development), the Mexican government agency which created the resorts of Cancún, Huatulco and several others is spearheading the Real Estate development at Litibu. Work on the project began in 2006, but construction slowed because of the U.S. economic slowdown. However, market activity has recently increased and construction has resumed with plans to build seven luxury hotels in Litibu as well as a number of residential units.
The first phase of the project debuted in March of 2010 with the opening of the 18-hole Litibu Golf Course. Designed by Greg Norman, this challenging par 72 course features seven holes in the “link” style, eight in which you’re surrounded by jungle and three where you can enjoy spectacular ocean views of the Pacific Ocean.
For a romantic getaway, check out Litibu’s flagship hotel, La Tranquila. This brand-new, five-star hotel complex offers the weary traveler seven swimming pools as well as an infinity pool on the beach. Its amenities compare well with the nearby Four Seasons and St. Regis hotels in Punta Mita, but with prices that are more affordable.
For a bit of pampering, consider spending a day at the Sanctuary Spa, part of the Haixa Residential Resort. Located in a lush tropical jungle setting, the Sanctuary Spa offers private massages, saunas, and steam baths as well as moisturizing, detox or exfoliation body wraps.
